Landshapes

2021

Landshapes explores the use of Artificial Intelligence as a design tool for societal change. The outcome is an art installation of AI-generated landscapes – images that look real, yet have never been seen by anyone before.

As the center piece of a climate exhibition, it enables visitors to become absorbed in the morphing landscapes and experience a changing climate in an open-ended manner. Instead of utilising fear or offering an immediate product solution, it sparks fascination, offer a place of wonder, and allow the viewer to dream of a positive future again.

Landshapes was created by Frederik Ueberschär in collaboration with Google AI and under the supervision of Alessandro Bozzon and myself in the scope of his Master’s thesis at Delft University of Technology. It received an overwhelming positive response and since it’s completion has been exhibited at various events in Europe and lay the basis for further research on the optimization of the aesthetic beauty of AI-generated images.
